二十六號九點是查英語四級的時間,早上迷迷糊糊的起來,第一件事情就是看時間,已經九點多了,起床拿起手機登陸網站查詢自己的四級成績,好不容易登陸上去,顯示"查詢人數過多,請稍后再試。" 看到這行字,并不甘心,換了一個坐姿又查了一遍。
盡可能的睜大眼睛,總分460,噢耶,過了!425過四級,想起來復習的日子,厚厚的一本四級單詞,還有十套題,其實我沒背多少單詞,題也只是考前做了幾套。但是每天都看一部英文電影,鍛煉聽力,做題的時候,每個類型題都認真的分析,琢磨。作文也看過很多,這是我第二次考英語四級了,分析第一次的成績,有聽力,閱讀,作文和翻譯,這三部分我的得分都不高,一百二十多分,總分是358,這次我苦練聽力,做閱讀的時候也很認真,單詞雖然沒背完一本,但是也背了百頁。
這次成績比上次提高了一百多分,我也很高興,也為自己感到自豪,我的作文和翻譯部分不好,這次也不例外,聽力和閱讀都是一百七。
剛剛結束考試的時候感覺答的還不錯,但是一想到單詞沒背完,心里也是沒有底?;厮奚嵋院?,室友都在討論題目,每人的題目不同。室友也都考了,可惜的是算我總共兩個人過了。問了問我以前的同學,也沒有過,不過她們都是第一次考,還有機會。

大學英語四級圖表作文是四級考試各類作文中難點,也是整套四級試卷命題人的重點之一。其命題模式為全英文形式,符合命題人“既考寫作又考理解”的考查初衷。圖表作文的隱含信息量更多,對于表達的要求更高,因此也更容易出現偏題現象。為了幫助學生實現取得四級考試好成績的目標,對于作為首道題目的作文應予以足夠的重視。
認知文體學起源于上個世紀90年代,是跨語言學、文學研究和認知科學的新的文體學流派,是從語言選擇和語言模式的認知效果為起點,探討語言形式選擇的認知結構和認知過程,力圖為語篇及其解讀的關系提供更系統、更科學的闡述。主要理論包括語篇世界理論、前景化理論、概念隱喻和整合理論、圖形-背景理論等。新生的認知文體學主要以文學文本為研究對象,隨著發展的成熟其研究領域也擴大到了小說和戲劇以外的各種非文學語體乃至非印刷媒介的文體。本文試圖從認知文體學的圖形――背景理論的視角來解讀四級圖表作文偏題的認知理據,以幫助考生順利完成審題這一步驟,從而優質完成寫作任務。
一、圖形―背景理論
趙艷芳(2001)認為認知語言學在研究語言時主要采取三種觀點:經驗觀(experiential view)、注意觀(attentional view)、突顯觀(prominence view)。其中突顯觀認為,信息的突顯程度決定語言結構中信息的取舍與安排。圖形-背景理論是以突顯(salience,prominence)原則為基礎的認知觀。例如:當我們觀察周圍環境中的某個物體時,通常會把這個物體作為知覺上突顯的圖形,把環境作為認知背景。
首先把圖形-背景運用于認知語言學研究中是Talmy(2000),他認為“圖形”,即注意的焦點部分,指某一認知概念或感知中突出的部分,其特別的價值是突顯?!氨尘啊眲t是為突出圖形而起襯托作用的部分,相對于圖形來講,突顯程度較低,是認知上的參照點。決定圖形或者背景的因素包括移動方向、觀察的方位、注意的焦點等??锓紳?、文旭(2003)探討了圖形――背景這一認知結構在“語言空間”結構和“時間事件”結構中的現實化,認為圖形――背景分離原則不僅是一種空間組織的基本認知原則,也是語言組織概念內容的一個基本認知原則。
二、案例分析
圖表作文是將非漢字信息(通常用圖表表示的數字或信息)轉換成文字信息的一種作文,它要求考生用文字來描述非文字性的圖表或對圖表顯示的關系作解釋說明。這種作文主要測試考生從非文字材料中獲取信息、分析問題和解決問題的能力。因此如何正確審題尤為重要。筆者以2013年6月四級考試的作文之一――父子談論倒垃圾的題目為例來闡釋圖形――背景理論對于正確審題的指導作用。
本篇作文試題包括全英文的解題指示和一副以兩個人物形象、兩句英文對話和一些日用品實物組成的漫畫。英文的解題指示主要是對考生寫作的字數和書寫的時間以及主題的確立給出了一些限定。除了具體的父子兩人的人物形象之外,漫畫主要內容是這對父子的對話。兒子說:“Dad.I’m a bit worried about disposing of nuclear waste.” 父親回答道:“If you can empty the dustbin here,you can do anything.”書桌前的角落里放著一個堆滿雜物的垃圾桶。漫畫作者為了確保讀者可以正確掌握漫畫所傳遞的信息,還在垃圾桶上寫出 “ dustbin”的字樣。這些日用品雜物都是用來輔助理解父子對話的,而并非漫畫所表達的主要意圖。因為人物和物體相比,往往動態的人物是凸顯的圖形而靜態的物體是襯托的背景。在考生正確認知題目中全部詞匯和語法結構的前提下,把兩句對話都作為審題的對象,就會發現這篇漫畫的主題是說要從小事做起,不要好高騖遠,與其關心世界上的大事不如先把身邊的小事做好。那么接下來就要根據這一主題構思框架,寫出各段的主題句,擴展段落,綴段成篇。
圖形-背景理論認為:要對圖表中反應的問題進行評述或者得出相應的結論,首先要看懂圖表所含信息及其相互之間的關系,也就是確立誰是圖形、什么是背景。當然這一過程常常是在無意識的情況下完成的。
注意力(attention)是在談及圖形與背景理論的時候必須被提及的概念。作為動態經歷的閱讀,是一種不斷地根據圖形與背景的關系來改變注意力,并能由注意力的變換而重新確定圖形與背景的過程。這一過程中注意力是具有選擇性和轉移性的。首先,考生在拿到試卷之后,注意力可能會被作文題目中的漫畫所吸引,從而使漫畫作為認知圖形得以突顯,而英文的解題指示則弱化為背景。產生這一現象的原因是由于“鮮明的、具有移動性的”物體更容易成為圖形。而這一做法可能導致對主題的遺漏甚至誤判。由于漫畫的簡潔抽象和對話的全英文形式造成考生的失落和恐慌心理,從而給解題帶來麻煩。在圖表作文的輔導過程中,教師需要強調正確的審題認知順序,不論是何種形式的圖形表格,都應從上到下從左到右的認知順序來完成審題,這種注意力的控制是完成正確審題的第一步。
因此,首先我們把英文的解題指示凸顯為圖形,把整份考卷視為背景。在英文的解題指示中對考生完成的文章提出了各種明晰的要求,而這些要求都必須被滿足。如“ you are allowed 30 minutes”,“write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words”。這里既有時間的限制又有字數的要求,考生如果打破這些限制將會面臨失分甚至是舞弊的處理。這其中最重要的信息還是對于主題的限制 “your views on the importance of doing small things before undertaking something big.” 由此可見,考生的文章是要圍繞從小事做起展開的。由于一些考生的注意力優先指向了漫畫,使整個認知過程發生了混亂,導致一些考生忽視了解題指示中對主題的要求,片面的看到漫畫中提到清理垃圾的問題,從而把文章的主題錯誤的定位于環境保護和綠色出行上,使得這一組的圖形――背景關系由“倒垃圾――從小事做起――背景關系”變化為“倒垃圾――合理處理垃圾――背景關系”。此外,還有部分考生被相對生僻的詞匯 “disposing”和 “nuclear waste”吸引了注意力,從而把主題定義為謹慎開發和使用核能,甚至聯想到日本的福島核泄漏事件,從而使“倒垃圾――從小事做起――背景關系”變化為“擔憂核廢料的處理問題――正確對待和使用核能――背景關系”。產生這種偏題現象,除去考生使用背誦的模版生搬硬套以外,最主要的是在審題過程中忽視認知的理性順序,遺漏了部分有效信息。這兩種偏題現象都是信息的缺失或者部分信息的非理性放大,造成圖形――背景關系的缺失和錯誤,最終導致審題的失敗。
其次,圖形為漫畫的凸顯,解題指示弱化為背景。在看懂解題指示之后,漫畫的作用是用來審核所確定主題的正確性的。漫畫由于其鮮明生動的特點,雖然簡潔但卻涵蓋了豐富的內容??忌鷳诮忸}指示的背景中來解讀漫畫,擯棄無關的內容,凸顯主題。根據認知的順序或者兩句對話的語義,都可以看出兒子是對話的發起者,而父親是對話的承接者?!癉ad” 這一稱呼也驗證了這一點,相反如果父親的話語是以 “Son”為起點的,那么一般來說父親就是對話的發起者了,因為稱謂一般是用來引起受話人注意的。兒子說擔憂核廢料的處理;父親說如果你可以把這里的垃圾倒掉,你可以做任何事。父親的反饋看似沒有回答兒子的擔憂,和兒子的話不相關。實際上,父親話語的意思是不要去擔心核廢料的處理了,先把我們家的垃圾處理了;只有把小事做好了,才有可能做好國家大事。這也就完成了漫畫作者從“擔憂核廢料的處理――正確對待和使用核能――背景關系”到“倒垃圾――從小事做起――背景關系”的轉變。從而呼應“解題指導――背景關系”中的同一主題。
最后,把父親的話凸顯為圖形,把整個社會當做映襯背景。如果考生把父與子之間的對話僅僅看作是父親對兒子的教育,而把主題定位為教育問題或是有效的兒童教育的方式,這種做法是把“社會教育問題”視為背景關系,把父親對話的語義“從小事做起”升級為“如何教育孩子”。這種立意之所以不正確是因為,首先它完全拋棄了解題指示,只把注意力集中在漫畫上。其次對漫畫中父子的對話也理解錯誤,主觀拔高了漫畫作者所要表達的意圖,把“倒垃圾――從小事做起――背景關系”任意的更改為 “父子談話――兒童教育問題――社會教育問題”。不考慮解題指導,把漫畫的主旨定義為僅僅是父親對兒子的勸告和期望,以此為作文的主題也是片面的。正確的做法是把這一勸告放在社會的大環境之下,也就是以整個社會為背景,使得“倒垃圾――從小事做起――背景關系”得到升華,變為“從小事做起――全社會”,這才是本篇作文題目的命題人的測試意圖。
總之,在大學英語四級圖表作文的寫作過程中,首先要克服心理障礙,消除對此類作文形式的陌生感。最重要的是認真審題,正確理解解題指導和圖表,理解命題人的測試目的。本文從認知文體學的圖表――背景理論的視角對于正確審題提供了一種更為科學系統的嚴謹的方法,希望對于四級作文的應試以及教學均有一定的輔助作用。

應用文寫作不僅能考查學生的語法、詞匯等語言能力,而且能考查學生的表達能力、組織能力、分析能力和邏輯推理能力等,是學生語言綜合素養的反應。英語專業四級便條寫作是一種內容簡短的書信形式寫作,要求學生仔細閱讀和分析所給的情景,就便條涉及的內容進行臨時性的詢問、留言和通知等,大多有較緊迫的時間限制,考查學生的語言交際能力。本文試從英語專業四級便條寫作著手,分析其寫作特點,研究多種課堂教學方法在實踐中的應用,進而使學生掌握應用文的寫作技巧,提高獨立撰寫各類英語文書的水平。
一、英語便條的寫作特點
英文書信有正式與非正式之分,英文便條為非正式書信。作為一種簡短信函,它多使用非正式語體,因此形式比一般書信簡單,突出實用性和功能性。專四的便條寫作比較容易得分,因為已經非常模式化,所以學生可以將各套真題中的不同主題下的優秀便條加以歸納總結,找出其固定的表達模式加以靈活運用,如表達建議類的便條,可以按照背景陳述、建議內容、理由羅列和鼓勵話語的模式,結合情景所給出的細節擴寫即可。一般而言,專四便條寫作在評分上有幾個標準:注意格式、內容、語言和字數,在10分鐘要寫50~60詞,格式正確、內容完整、語言得體。其中在內容上是否達成良好的文字溝通,要傳遞的信息是否得以體現是考查學生交際能力的一個重點。
二、課堂教學方法的應用
鑒于以上對便條寫作的特點分析,不難發現便條寫作等應用文體的寫作應側重實踐操作性,只介紹應用文體的寫作知識,如介紹如何寫開頭,如何寫主體,如何寫結尾等會使學生產生厭倦情緒,應加以改進。一般而言,為達到提高學生興趣與寫作效率的目的,應用文寫作課應采納以下幾種教學方法。
1.案例教學法
教師可以將同一主題下分屬不同檔次的范文作為案例組織教學,要求這一案例必須與教學內容緊密結合,如在一封道歉便條中,對提出建議作為補償的表達:“I shall be obliged if you will come to my home and we will discuss it further.”就比“You must come to my home and we will discuss it further.”的表達更禮貌一些。通過對具體案例表達的細節比較,學生很直觀地形成對所寫主題的感性認識,提高寫作效率。
2.小組討論法
將案例提前提供給學生,要求學生做好預習準備。在課堂上分組討論該案例,并派代表發言,鼓勵學生進行頭腦風暴、辯論等活動進而加深對應用文知識和寫作方法與技巧的掌握。如在練習祝賀便條的寫法時,給學生一個情景:以校友的身份對本校50周年校慶寫封祝賀便條,在分組討論中,學生分別考慮到寫作的步驟、寫信人的身份、語言的得體性和寫信的格式等問題,這不僅可以培養學生的表達能力和思維能力,還可以培養與他人合作的能力。
3.任務驅動法
課前教師先引入本單元的寫作課題及任務,介紹完成該任務需達到的要求和實施任務的步驟,接著學生按教師的要求執行任務,最后報告任務完成的情況。任務完成后,教師總結任務的完成情況,分析在實踐操作過程中遇到的具體的問題及解決辦法。如Tom考試失利,好友如何寫封安慰便條幫助Tom走出傷心的陰霾,要求學生在寫作中首先點明慰問的事情并安慰好友,最后表達良好的祝愿。在這一情景任務的驅動下,按照教師的提綱規劃,學生對這一主題的便條寫作便得心應手,游刃有余。
4.讀寫結合法
在寫作教學中,不管是句段寫作還是篇章寫作,都可以讓學生先進行大量的閱讀以讀促寫。應用文寫作也不例外,先讓學生在讀的過程中理解范文大意,熟悉該主題的結構與格式特點,然后要求學生模仿寫作,這種以讀促寫的教學方式不僅可以提高學生閱讀能力,還可以增強語言的輸人和語篇構建能力。例如在寫道歉便條時,先提供給學生大量的道歉便條范例,讓學生總結出寫道歉便條的注意事項,如要用表示道歉的字眼明確表達歉意,要求對方諒解,切忌對自己的過失做過多辯解,之后便很容易地明白道歉便條的寫作模式。
綜上所述,應用文寫作教學應改變傳統的教學模式,讓學生明確教學任務和方向,在實踐中不斷豐富寫作知識,掌握一定的寫作規律,學會運用這些知識修改病文病例,最終提高寫作能力。此外,對應用文寫作課堂教學模式進行分析還可不同程度地培養實用型人才,提升學生的就業競爭力。

One day, my mother bought two little rabbits for me. I’m very happy.
From that on, the two little rabbits became my good friends. They have two little ears, red eyes, with white and fat boby. They’re marvellous.
Everyday, they play with each other happily. One day, I couldn’t find them. I asked my mother: ”Where are they? ” My mother told me that She didn’t know. At last, I found them in the grass. They were very dirty. I was angry, but when I looked at their lovely faces, I was happy again.
I love my little rabbits, and they love me. They are my good friends forever.
